I’m in this show. Yay!

This year, 30 international artists will make work based on the “Time Lapsed” theme and show it at Kobe Art Village Center, just a 10-minute walk from JR Kobe Station.

On the evening of May 25th, come out and celebrate the opening elbow-to-elbow with the artists! Entry is free, and there will be some light refreshments.

If you can’t make it to the opening, you can head to the KAVC to see the show through the 1st of June.

Yesterday I went to Takatsuki City to see this installation of 1,000 koinobori, in celebration of Children’s Day on May 5th. I’m determined to get a giant koinobori (3 meters long would be awesome), but the nice ones with gold designs are really expensive…

I grew up in NM, moved to AZ for college, worked in the publishing industry for a few years after graduating, then came to Japan through the JET Programme (this was a pretty long application process, but I was lucky to get accepted on my first attempt). I live in Himeji, a small city close to Kobe/Osaka.

I waited for around 5 hours today to see 15 minutes of yabusame...

This is a t-shirt design for a relay marathon I participated in called the Kobe Sweets Marathon. We ran… and then we got sweets! A pretty good reward system, I think. Our collective time was 3:42. Good job Sugar Rushers!

Going through some old kitsuke (kimono dressing) photos and found this one. In October 2011 I painted myself a calavera obi. I grew up in New Mexico, which has a wonderful mix of cultures, and Dia de los Muertos is a big part of local celebrations. I like cultural mashups… maybe because it’s all I know.

‘Shibboleth.’

In an effort to dabble in real media again, I picked up a little watercolor set and tried to finalize a self-portrait that had been sitting in my sketchbook for a while. I inked it the way I always used to ink (4+ years ago) with some Copic pens. I don’t really like the result, though. I remembered why I stopped inking… the final drawing lost whatever movement and feeling I liked about the original sketch. Maybe I’ll try switching over to brushes for inking, or I’ll just go back to… not inking! I dunno.

(The speech bubble says “Atama ga masshiro,” which literally means “my head is completely white” but is actually the equivalent of the English “My mind’s gone blank.”
